Schools

The earliest reference to payments made for a school in Thriplow in the Churchwardens’ and Overseer’s accounts dates back to 1765.  Before the present school was opened in 1863 there were at least two other schools – one was held in a cottage on Church Street and the other was a non-conformist school held in a building on Fowlmere Road that no longer exists.

If you are interested in a member of your family’s attendance at the present Thriplow School you will be glad to know that the Society’s Archivist, Dr Shirley Wittering, is transcribing the registers into a searchable format which will be available in due course.

There are several articles in the Journal Archives about the schools. Here is a selection; you can find more by searching the alphabetical index on the Journal Archive page.

To read about all the known schools in Thriplow see the article in volume 19.2 (2010).

Just one of the articles featuring the School logbooks is this one that looks back 100 years ago in 2005. You can read it in volume 14.1.

For a rather different read you might like “A Pictorial Conundrum”, and even be able to solve it! This article in volume 22.3 (2014) includes old photographs of the school and the children attending.
